General Benefit Resources

Employee Benefit Resources

Choosing a health insurance plan can feel overwhelming, and it’s important to consider more than just the monthly premium. Eligible RCUH employees may choose to enroll in one of six medical plans (three HMOs and three PPOs) as well as one dental plan. Please review the resources below to compare costs and coverage details so you can select the plan that best meets the needs of you and your family.

RCUH has only one dental plan – Hawaii Dental Service (HDS).

HDS Dental Plan Information:

RCUH offers two types of retirement accounts:

  • Supplemental Retirement Annuity (SRA) 403(b): employee-contributed, optional enrollment
  • Group Retirement Annuity (GRA) 401(a): employer-contributed, automatic enrollment upon eligibility

Benefit Considerations

We encourage all RCUH employees to review the RCUH Guide to Benefits and the additional resources on this webpage for important information about their benefits.

  • Enroll in Benefits:
    • Eligible hires will have an opportunity to elect for certain benefits upon completion of their electronic hire documents within the RCUH Electronic Hiring System (EHS).
    • Eligible employees may elect to enroll in certain benefits at any time throughout the plan year without experiencing a Qualifying Life Event (QLE). Please review the timing considerations in the RCUH Guide to Benefits to learn more.
  • Change their Initial Enrollment:
    • Hires may request changes to their initial benefit elections by contacting the RCUH Employee Benefits section at [email protected] no later than the 20th of the month following their start date (e.g. hire date: 6/12/2026; deadline to request changes: 6/20/2026).
  • Cancel their Enrollment:
    • Employees may request to cancel certain benefits at any time during the plan year (RCUH Plan Year: July 1st - June 30th). Please keep in mind re-enrollment may be limited to a Qualifying Life Event (QLE) or the annual RCUH Open Enrollment period.

Taking unpaid leave can impact employee benefits.

  • Medical and Dental (premiums deducted in the 2nd pay period of each month):
    • If employees take unpaid leave and do not have enough earnings to cover their premiums, their coverage will be terminated until they return to work in a full capacity.
      • Reinstatement following return to work is not automatic. Employees would need to provide enrollment paperwork to the RCUH Employee Benefits team within 30-days of their return.
  • FSA Healthcare:
    • If employees take unpaid leave and do not have enough earnings to cover their pay period contribution, RCUH will be required to back-collect the missed contributions upon their return to work.

Employees are encouraged to review their benefits whenever an FTE change or unpaid leave occurs, and contact the RCUH Employee Benefits team with any questions/concerns.

Timing is Everything!

If employees experience an Qualifying Life Event (QLE), they have 30 days from the event date to enroll in health coverage or add eligible dependents to their existing plan(s). Missing this 30‑day window means waiting until the next Open Enrollment period. Please contact the RCUH Employee Benefits as soon as possible following experiencing a QLE.
